Headline: Recession now likely (But we’ll be OK)

Unless you’re a woman from Venus or a man from Mars - and many of us are - the Saturday headline in the Free Press came as no surprise.

Though recession is a dirty word to many economists, share holders, employers and employees I’d like to say there are benefits.

I’m not the first to say this and I won’t be the last.

For example:

Though our economy is shrinking (“...largely due to declines in wholesale trade, manufacturing and the mining and oil and gas industries”) does this not also mean our business-as-usual, growth-without-limits and unsustainable production methods are taking a bit of a breather?

And our constant degradation of the environment is taking a day off?

During a recession would be a good time for businesses and governments to talk about ways to make the transition from a certain dead-end economy to a sustainable one.

And a good time for a country to assess its past and present economic and environmental course and decide how best to repair damage done and being done that affects the future health of every citizen.

That way we save ourselves from the future headline:
