I call them 'bits and bites'. They rest in a small plastic container on my workbench. And when a birdhouse is almost done I'll reach for the bits. Maybe a bite.

Nuts, bolts, washers, odd bits of dowel. Not much goes to waste in the shop.

If Rule 1 in most shops is 'measure twice, cut once', Rule 2 is likely 'don't throw anything out'.
