Birthdays creep up on me and catch me almost unaware. My own came and went recently, with some mild celebration and a pleasant surprise or two.

One surprise was a trivet made by the Kingston area craftsman Real LaChance. As it happened (during a wee vacation in August), while I was distracted by dragonflies, my wife purchased a wise old owl for me.
