Bird Watching

The Sweet Junco

Sparrows try to eat me out of house and home almost everyday. They make a mess too while flicking some seeds aside to grab a tasty bit of something they like. Seed tossed aside never fails to attract the attention of squirrels to the ground at the base of the feeder and that's the last thing I want.

However, there is one upside to the sparrows' wasteful habit. Sweet juncos can make a living from the seed that lands upon a metal lampshade directly under the feeder. (Even bold and boastful jays cannot do that because their extra weight sends the lamp shade toward an uncomfortable angle). And I enjoy spotting a flash of juncos as they speed about my yard and trees.
