Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, November 11
There were more than 3,000 people in attendance at the Remembrance Day service held Tuesday at the unique, expansive museum next door to the Hamilton airport. Two fellow Londoners and I were absorbed by the quiet crowd, as well as in the poems, songs and stories related to remembrance.
Many members of particular organizations were asked to stand and be recognized and some revealed dwindling numbers of members. The last to be called to 'stand if you are able' was the Merchant Marine.
But no one answered the call.
I thought at the time the same might be true if remaining members of Combined Operations were asked to stand. My father is gone eleven years now. Most of his mates have passed away as well. I can only name three members still alive, all in their nineties, too old to travel to Hamilton to be briefly recognized.
In a few years only veterans' stories will remain, brief histories of men who stood tall - filled with more than apprehension - when called to do so.
